Volvo Upgrades XC70 Wagon

Volvo Upgrades XC70 Wagon

Volvo is confident that its redesigned 2008 XC70 Cross Country stands out in the crowded crossover segment.

Volvo may have cornered the market on upscale station wagons, but the Swedish safety barons are not resting on their laurels. The redesigned 2008 XC70 Cross Country is an improvement in drivability, luxury and, of course, safety.

The basics: The XC70 comes from the same Ford Motor Co. EUCD platform as the S80 sedan and Land Rover LR2. The XC70 adds 2 inches in wheelbase and 4-plus inches in length over its predecessor. For more industry insider news, go to www.autonews.comThe engine gains a cylinder but loses the turbo. The standard gearbox now is a six-speed automatic; it was a five-speed. The interior is more refined, and there is a big increase in technical goodies.

Notable features: It wouldn't be a Volvo if it weren't loaded with such safety features as adaptive cruise control, a blind-spot warning system, drowsy-driver alert and a collision warning system with automatic braking. The safety cage surrounding the occupants uses four kinds of high-strength steel.

Volvo also is making the most of its parts-bin relationship with Ford, borrowing Hill Descent Control from Land Rover.

The standard Haldex all-wheel drive, when mated to standard Dynamic Stability and Traction Control, grips logging-road surfaces like a rally car. The front MacPherson struts, combined with a multilink rear suspension, keep on-road driving conditions plush.

There are other neat gimmicks. The rear seats easily convert from an adult size to a child-bolstered seat. When that happens, the seat belt spooling and airbag curtain deployments change accordingly. Also, the cargo area has aluminum alloy rails with movable anchors.

On the design front, the XC70 has more defined shoulders, moving further away from the brick look. The tailgate glass comes down lower than the side glass.

What Volvo says: ?We defined the crossover segment with the first generation,? Leif Settergren, Volvo Cars of North America program manager for the XC70, V70 and XC90, said at a press event here. ?We are the dominant player in this market.?

Anne Belec, CEO of Volvo Cars of North America, added: ?The XC70 segment dynamic is changing with more crossovers and more players coming in. We're playing it conservatively.?

Compromises and shortcomings: The strong euro vs. the dollar has pushed Volvo to make optional equipment out of safety features it would have preferred were standard. The XC70's increased weight and bigger engine resulted in a disappointing 15 mpg in a daylong test drive in varying Montana road conditions.

The market: Although the cross-over market is glutted, the segment for rugged wagons is small, especially with the deletion of the Audi Allroad. Although many people think of Volvo as a wagon company ? and the XC70 is the brand's best-selling wagon ? its sales still trail far behind those of the S40 and S60 sedans and the XC90 SUV. Volvo expects to sell 12,000 to 15,000 XC70 units a year; in 2006, it sold 5,602 front-drive V70 wagons in the United States.

The skinny: The XC70 goes on sale today, Oct. 1. But with seemingly every automaker building a cross- over, Volvo must count on its famously loyal wagon customers to not stray.

Subaru Forester, Outback, Legacy and Impreza models are among those affected by the recall

Subaru is recalling more than 600,000 vehicles from northern states, built between 2005 and 2014, for a problem with corroding brake lines. According to the NHTSA report, saltwater could splash on the lines through a gap in the fuel-tank protector, resulting in excessive corrosion. If one of them cracks, problems would obviously occur.

Vehicles affected include the 2005-2009 Outback and Legacy, '08-'11 Impreza, '08-'14 WRX/STI and '09-'13 Forester models.

To be included, the vehicles need to be registered in cold-weather, road-salt states. If you live in Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, West Virginia, Wisconsin or the District of Columbia, you will probably be receiving a notice soon.

Subaru will inspect the lines for leaks and replace them where necessary. If no seepage occurs, the company will rustproof the areas free of charge.

Concerned owners can call Subaru at (800) 782-2783 or NHTSA at (888) 327-4236.

Volvo's performance arm, Polestar, will offer software upgrades for the T6 and 2.5T engines that will increase horsepower and torque. The upgrade should calm Volvo fans who missed out on the limited-edition Polestar C30.

For the T6 engine in the 2010 Volvo XC60 and 2009-2010 XC70 Polestar will offer a bump in output from 281 hp to 311 hp. Torque grows from 295 lb-ft to 354 lb-ft.

For the turbocharged 2.5-liter, power grows from 208 hp to 237 hp and torque increases by 37 to a total of 273 lb-ft. The turbocharged 2.5-liter is found in older versions of the Volvo S60, S80, V70 and the XC line. The T6 upgrade costs $1,495 while the 2.5 upgrade costs $1,295.

The software upgrade is standard on current Volvo XC60 and S60 R-Design cars, the C30 Polestar and the C70 Inscription. It's available as an option on almost all of the current T5- and T6-equipped cars.

Japan-market Subaru Legacy tS takes STI to a new place

Japan-market Subaru Legacy tS takes STI to a new place

The tS trim for Subaru in Japan puts an emphasis on suspension upgrades. Photo by DINO DALLE CARBONARE

Subaru Tecnica International has added an extra niche--dubbed tS--to its array of specially tuned models, and the first example out of the garage is the STI Legacy tS. STI will produce just 600 of the Japan-only models, and some 200 are already reserved.

The new tS branding, which stands for "tuned by STI," fills the space between stock Subaru models and the full-fledged S- and R-branded vehicles STI usually creates. Like everything from STI, the tS modifications are intended to give a tangible performance edge.

On the Legacy, stiffer Bilstein shocks mated to lower and firmer STI springs inject greater road feel and precision into both steering and handling, and the big Legacy comes alive through the corners. The front strut tower brace deserves special mention--it features a flexible center joint that makes the front more rigid through the corners but allows some give on turn-in. The result is evident in a more direct response from the steering and much better resistance to understeer, allowing the driver to carry more speed more efficiently into the corner.

V2-100629938.jpg

Special STI wheels, fitted with slightly wider Bridgestone tires, give a more aggressive look to the exterior, which wears special STI parts such as the front lip spoiler and the roof spoiler (or a trunk spoiler for the sedan).

Engine output remains the same, but the 282-hp, turbocharged 2.5-liter flat-four now sings through a performance STI exhaust system.

For many drivers, the tS will provide all they need in a lightly tuned version of the Legacy, although true enthusiasts will wait for the fire-breathing S model.

2005 Subaru Legacy and Outback: Listen to the Voices: Subaru ups the ante with more horsepower in the Legacy and Outback

SOMETIMES IT’S GOOD TO trust the voices in your head. Not the ones that tell you it’s okay to covet thy neighbor’s Subaru WRX STi, but rather, the ones that whisper, “Trust your instincts.”

Our instincts screamed “yeah!” loud and clear at the first glimpse of the 2005 Subaru Legacy and Outback models. These cars not only pack a much bigger punch, Subaru also gave them more refined interiors.

The interiors are a step up from previous models but retain a look and feel Subaru owners have come to appreciate. If you are new to Subaru and you jump behind the wheel of, say, the Outback L.L. Bean Edition, you won’t be able to help but find it attractive. The interior reflects a harmonious balance of chrome, faux mahogany and leather. Both the dash panel and the console are pleasing to the eye without a hint of that dreaded parts-bin appearance.

V2-405240710.jpg

Subaru has upped its interior look and feel.

There are two new boxer engines, both making 250 hp. One is a 2.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder with 250 lb-ft of torque, the other a normally aspirated 3.0-liter dohc six available solely in the flagship Outback 3.0 R. The 2.5 was created to satisfy Legacy and Outback drivers who lust for STi-type performance. For the record, it is not the same engine used in the WRX STi. Most major components, including the block and turbocharger, are different, although the turbo character is similar. The 3.0-liter, which is up from the outgoing six’s 212 hp, was designed to deliver smooth, strong, even power throughout the rev range for more of a big-engine feel.

If you appreciate the way a well-engineered turbo engine pulls, then you will enjoy the Legacy 2.5 GT and Outback 2.5 XT. They even come with functional hood scoops to help the turbo breathe. (“Way cool,” says the voice.) Subaru also managed to mount its boxer engine lower in the chassis for a better center of gravity and improved handling. Plus, the steering ratio on the Legacy GT lineup is now 15:1, for a quicker, more responsive feel. For normal driving this ratio makes for oh-so easy operation. When cruising at speeds like many owners might drive if they had just suffered a beating at the craps table, then odds are it may seem a tad twitchy.

Along with the fresh engines comes a re-engineered automatic transmission that reacts to changes in lateral g forces. In short, if you fling your new Legacy or Outback into a corner, the transmission will hold the right gear to optimize power. An automanual mode is offered.

V3-405240710.jpg

Driving along the magnificent roads surrounding Lake Tahoe, we noticed Subarus of all varieties and vintages appearing as if on command.

A command from where, we hadn’t a clue, though as the voice in our head piped up one last time, we think we figured it out: “Just drive,” it said.

2008 Subaru Legacy 3.0R

2008 Subaru Legacy 3.0R

It looks sedate, but the Subaru Legacy 3.0R has plenty of gusto. Photo by JACOB LINGEMAN

OUR TAKE: The Legacy has always stood out among the snooze-fest that makes up the bulk of the midsize sedan pack. The new-for-'08 3.0R is no exception. Power delivery from this six is smooth, with a linear power band and excellent throttle response.

Of course, if you're a shift-it-yourself type, you're better off looking at the 2.5-liter turbocharged GT Limited model. Optioned with almost everything that comes standard on the automatic-only 3.0R, the GT Limited comes out to roughly the same price (with the exception of the Bilstein suspension).

For daily shuttles, the 3.0R displays great road manners. It's a solid rig on expressway jogs and compliant enough over worn and rutted city roads, though many midsize shoppers will find the ride a bit harsh. Snap the SI-DRIVE into sport mode and the transmission holds a gear to redline, or opt to use the large paddle shifters to choose your own gear. The "rev-matching downshift blipping control" feature of the transmission does work, but is pretty slow-witted when you want to go down a gear.

Toss the 3.0R around and you will find acceptable roll and healthy lateral grip for a car of this heft, and the steering is quick to respond to inputs with good feel.

BOTTOM LINE: The only real downside is the flat-six's thirsty nature. Play around in sport mode for too long and you will see the fuel needle dive fast.

Volvo aims for global market with police-spec XC70

Volvo aims for global market with police-spec XC70

The XC70 D5 AWD was chosen as the best vehicle in the Swedish police-car fleet. Photo by Volvo

Volvo is staking its police-car fleet ambitions in Europe and beyond on a newly upgraded chassis underpinning the Volvo XC70, already a popular choice among police forces across Europe. The Swedish police force recently designated the 2014 Volvo XC70 D5 AWD as the best car in its fleet after carrying out exhaustive tests, with an overall score of nine out of 10.

That's right, the diesel XC70 D5 AWD was chosen as the best vehicle in the police-car fleet in Sweden, even though on this side of the pond, the car is still associated more with ownership of multiple golden retrievers and the school run.

For police use, Volvo has tweaked the basic XC70 chassis by adding new anti-roll bars, shock absorbers and springs. XC70 D5 AWD wagons with the newly sorted chassis were then extensively tested in a range of environments, including some high-speed jaunts on the German autobahn.

"The vehicle fleet of the Swedish police is subject to among the most stringent demands in the world, and the Volvo XC70 D5 AWD is the best police car we have ever offered. We see a clear opportunity to increase our sales on a number of markets, both in markets where we previously had a presence, as well as in entirely new markets," said Ulf Rydne, business manager commercial vehicles at Volvo Car Special Vehicles and Accessories.

Volvo-improves-police-spec-XC70-wagon.jpg

The popularity of the XC70 among police agencies in Europe has been steadily growing. Photo by Volvo

Volvo currently sells between 500 and 600 examples of the XC70 wagon in police spec every year, though the vehicle has been growing in popularity in Belgium, the Netherlands and Switzerland. A number of municipalities in the U.S. have also purchased Volvo vehicles, but those few cars tended to be Volvo XC90s, which are now in their final year of production before an all-new model is set to debut. Volvo has been working on a special police-spec chassis for the XC70 for almost a year, the Swedish automaker being one of just a few automakers that has embarked on creating a special chassis for a police version of a civilian vehicle.

“The weight of police cars is increasing, which requires a stable chassis, and we were approaching the limit. Police forces need a car that performs predictably and does not offer any surprises. That is why we develop our police cars in close cooperation with the Swedish police, who are involved throughout the product-development phase. That way, we get firsthand insight into the demands placed on a police car," added Rydne.

If there are a number of things that can be inferred from the goals of Swedish police cars as opposed to police cars in other countries (aside from the fact that their liveries are designed for increased safety and visibility, rather than decreased visibility through the use of matte, earthy colors), it's that the presence of all-wheel drive, interior comfort and versatility is valued over rapid acceleration. Volvo's growing popularity in the U.K. police force is perhaps an indicator of the XC70's appeal in Europe, though we don't expect to see these in the U.S. anytime soon.

Subaru recall hits nearly 634,000 Legacy, Outback, Tribeca and Forester vehicles: Short circuit in 'puddle lights' could cause fire

Subaru recall hits nearly 634,000 Legacy, Outback, Tribeca and Forester vehicles: Short circuit in 'puddle lights' could cause fire

Faulty 'puddle lights' have sparked a Subaru recall impacting nearly 634,000 vehicles -- including certain examples of the 2010 and 2011 Subaru Legacy. Photo by Subaru

Subaru has issued a recall for 2010 and 2011 Legacy and Outback vehicles, 2006 through 2012 Tribeca crossovers and 2009 through 2012 Foresters. The automaker says that under-door “puddle lights” on those vehicles could, if exposed to an electrolytic fluid like salty water, short circuit and cause a fire.

All in all, 633,842 cars and crossovers are included in the recall. That's a big number, but there's a catch: only 53,999 of those vehicles have the faulty parts. Subaru is expected to notify owners of affected vehicles in February. Dealers will install a modified wiring harness designed to remedy the problem free of charge.

For more information on this recall, contact Subaru at (800) 782-2783 or the NHTSA hotline at (888) 327-4236, or visit www.safercar.gov and search for “Subaru recall campaign WQE-41.”

2015 Subaru WRX debuts at Los Angeles Auto Show

If you loved the rakish WRX concept that bowed in New York earlier this year, the production 2015 WRX, which debuted today at the Los Angeles Auto Show, may be a slight downer: decidedly less boy-racer than its predecessors, its sculpted fender flares and unique sheetmetal only slightly disguise its Impreza rootstock.

But the WRX has always been more about performance than style, anyway, and Subaru says the new car will top its predecessor on that front.

The '14 WRX's 2.0-liter turbocharged boxer-four squeezes out 268 hp and 258 lb-ft -- just a little bit more than the outgoing 2.5-liter turbo-equipped car. The motor is based on the 2.0-liter in the 2014 Forester, but it gets a list of enhancements, including different cams and valve springs; a six-speed manual transmission or an optional CVT connects it to all for wheels.

The WRX has grown a bit, which makes for a slightly roomier cabin. Subaru promises higher-quality interior materials, better fit and finish and a 4.3-inch LCD screen. To the despair of hatchback fanatics everywhere, however, there's no word on a five-door WRX variant -- at least for now -- so you'll have to look elsewhere if you have a pressing need to haul those groceries down gravely roads at rally speeds. Expect to see an even hotter WRX STI in the coming months.

Subaru-Legacy-Concept-LA-Auto-show.jpg

No, the Subaru Legacy concept is not on fire -- that's just a fog machine in action. We'll post clearer pictures as soon as we can snap them. Photo by Graham Kozak

Just feet away from the new WRX, Subaru officially unveiled the Legacy concept, which celebrates the 25th anniversary of the model while previewing future styling for the Subaru lineup.

There's nothing revolutionary about the clean, uncluttered concept, which shares some styling cues with the far more radical Viziv concept shown at Geneva. Its fascia is dominated by a hexagonal grille; sculpted fenders lead back to a tail not too dissimilar from the one on the WRX concept. Some of the features you see here will make it onto production vehicles down the line, though they'll undoubtedly be toned down first.

The Los Angeles Auto Show has long served as a spotlight for "green" cars, and a popular place to unveil new hybrid and electric vehicles. We'll have photos, video and complete coverage of all the manufacturer reveals and top news from this year's LA Auto Show right here, so check back often.

CES opens with fewer big wheels, including carmakers: 155,000 attendees don't seem too worried as they cram into the show anyway

CES opens with fewer big wheels, including carmakers: 155,000 attendees don't seem too worried as they cram into the show anyway

A big sign for a big show. Photo by Mark Vaughn

There are some grumblings that the annual CES is becoming less relevant in this era of 24-hour news and instant globalization of information on the internet. And you can make a good argument that the relevance of the world's largest consumer electronics show is at least evolving, for carmakers as well as for other industry giants.

It has always been an industry only show, with no public -- the “consumers” in "consumer electronics" -- allowed. And yet the industry wasn't there the same way it used to be.

Microsoft, Google and Apple were missing this year. Bill Gates didn't give a keynote address. And the days when electronics makers would pull the sheets off some world-goggling gizmo seem to be gone, the latter once-a-year reveals supplanted by instant fame on the internet as apps and appliances are developed.

Likewise, carmakers were changing the way they approached the show. Neither two-time keynote speaker Alan Mulally nor his red sweater vest were anywhere to be seen. Controversial Chrysler CEO Deiter Zetsche was not in town. And nary a GM CEO could be found anywhere near The Strip. Audi did have board member Wolfgang Durheimer onhand and he spoke at length with several Autoweek staffers and we're grateful for it. But it wasn't like the last six or seven years when car companies were sending their biggest guns to wow the web

Instead this year carmakers and car-related gizmo and gadget grinders used CES to show off new products and technologies, even if they weren't brand-spanking new. Nearly everyone seemed to have eight million new ways to cram apps into infotainment by accessing the cloud via voice control and redundant steering wheel controls.

-Ford and GM announced new access to their onboard infotainment and telematics platforms that will allow anyone who wants to easy access to build apps for autos.

-Visteon and Delphi were among Tier 1 suppliers who used CES to work their wares with potential partners. Delphi showed a wireless phone charger fitted in a center console, as well as a plug-in OBDII device to track your car's performance and whereabouts -- the latter coming soon as an aftermarket product.

-Lexus introduced a near-autonomous LS with sensors whirring, spinning and scanning all around it. The sexily named Advanced Active Safety Research Vehicle does not necessarily represent a robotic future, Lexus said, as drivers will always be part of safe commuting.

-Visteon used a Nissan Leaf as a platform to “investigate” the future of automobiles in the year 2020, when car sharing could be more common. To personalize borrowed, rented or shared cars, drivers could download personalized electronic interiors and infotainment settings as well as social contacts and information from cloud-based storage whenever they entered a new vehicle.

-Audi demonstrated its powerful and remarkably clear 3D audio that “adds height to your sound;” first by playing select high-def music in a Q7 with 1400 watts and 23 speakers, then in an adjacent acoustic demo chamber with 52 speakers and 18 channels. Yow. It's coming this spring.

-Audi also showed off its Piloted Driving, which takes over control of the car in stop-and-go traffic.

-Subaru highlighted its EyeSight pedestrian-detection system, already available on 2013 Legacy and Outback models, with a demo on a 2014 Forester. Once EyeSight detects a pedestrian in the car's path, it can brake the car all the way to a stop. Subaru has heard from other manufacturers interested in obtaining the proprietary system.

We'll have a look today at displays from Ford, Hyundai and Kia, and we'll roam around seeking other car-related devices for your consideration. It's a big show, and, seemingly, still relevant.

Volvo reveals pricing for refreshed 2014 model range

There are quite a few changes in Volvo's lineup for the 2014 model year, perhaps representing the most serious model shakeup for the automaker this decade. For starters, almost all the cars in Volvo's current U.S. lineup have been facelifted with the notable exception of the XC90 SUV, which enters its last model year before it is replaced by an all new truck. The refreshing of the lineup comes just in time, as Volvo's offerings in the U.S. were starting to attract criticism for not being updated as frequently as other automakers' cars.

Starting with the smallest model in Volvo's U.S. lineup, the S60 has been given a stylish new front fascia, including a grille with a larger Volvo badge. The S60 now starts at $33,315 for the entry-level (at least for North America) front-wheel drive T5 model, with the T6 AWD version starting at $40,165. A new sport package for the S60 includes sport seats and paddle shifters, as well as 18-inch wheels. The range-topping T6 R-Design now starts at $43,615.

V2-130809958.jpg

The popular XC60 has been given a nice freshening for the 2014 model year. Photo by Volvo

The XC60 crossover has been similarly refreshed with a new front fascia, and will now start at $35,765 for the 3.2-liter FWD model. The XC60 T6 AWD version will now retail for $40,165, while the range-topping XC60 R-Design weighs in at $46,715.

V3-130809958.jpg

The XC70 has been around for a while, so it needed this refresh more than most cars in the range. Photo by Volvo

The XC70, which has been with us since 2007, has been given new front and rear fascias for the 2014 model year as well as LED daytime running lights. The XC70 now starts at $35,415 for the 3.2-liter FWD model, and at $41,865 for the T6 AWD version. On the inside the XC70 gets two fully integrated height adjustable booster seats in the rear seating area.

V4-130809958.jpg

The S80 has been with us since 2006, and won't be replaced for another few years. Photo by Volvo

The S80, which has been with us since 2006, has been updated as well, sporting a redesigned front fascia and LED daytime running lights. New taillights have also been added, with LED bulbs incorporated into the new units. The S80 now starts at $40,815 for the 3.2-liter FWD model, with the range topping T6 AWD now starting at $44,865. The Inscription package in the S80 means you'll be getting ventilated front seats and Sovereign Hide soft leather, in addition to a few other interior touches.

The only model that continues on without a refresh for its final 2014 model year is the XC90 SUV, which had already been updated a few years ago. The XC90 now starts at $40,615 for the 3.2-liter FWD model, which is the sole powerplant. An R-Design package adds the Premier Plus trim level equipment to the XC90 and will start at $43,615, though there's still the even swankier R-Design Platinum which will set you back at least $46,315. While the departure of the brilliant 4.4-liter Yamaha V8 from the XC90 range was lamentable, we understand why it may have been a slow seller in the XC90 lineup. There's no word at this point in time regarding which engines will be available in the next-generation XC90, but we're fairly confident that the 3.2-liter unit will march on.

We're perhaps most excited about the Volvo model that's not here yet, the striking V60 wagon that's been kept from the U.S. market for the last few years for reasons not entirely understood by Volvo fans and Volvo dealers alike, given the car's popularity in other markets. The V60 will be arriving in early 2014, and we got a look at the refreshed model earlier in March when Volvo showed the R-Design model at the New York Auto Show.

Revving up for winter

It happens every year, that inevitable moment Mother Nature decides to unleash her snowy wrath on the greater part of the United States. Winter has arrived and suddenly your rear-wheel drive, high-performance cars aren't providing you with the performance or confidence you need to combat those Antarctic-esque conditions.

For those fortunate enough to live in year-round T-shirt permitting weather, we invite you to keep reading, because it's a fact that all 50 states receive some measure of winter weather in a typical year.

We've put together a how-to survival guide of the best cars to help you endure those long winter months.

Folks from the most snow-heavy regions will tell you that a rugged four-wheel-drive pickup or truck-based SUV is the way to go -- probably from past experience trying to navigate through category 5 blizzards or plowing their way out of mountainous snow drifts.

Now, we know what you're thinking, you hear the phrase “four-wheel-drive” and automatically generate a vision of dollar signs erupting from a gas pump. But thanks to modern automotive technology, the four-wheel-drive systems of today have become quite sophisticated and efficient.

Vehicles have the ability to engage four-wheel-drive simply by pressing a button, and others give you the option of choosing between rear-drive, four-wheel-drive, and a safety minded “automatic” mode in which the front axle is engaged when loss of traction is detected.

The more hard-core four-wheel-drive systems include a feature called “low range” gearing which is especially useful when extra traction is needed -- climbing up snow-trodden hills or wiggling your way out of deep snow. Forewarning, don't falsely assume that because you have the backing of four-wheel drive under your feet you can zip around like Jeff Gordon in the blizzard of '75. Four-wheel-drive simply helps you get out of snowy situations but doesn't do much when it comes to maneuvering corners and braking.

For buyers not looking for all the brawn of a four-wheel-drive vehicle, you're in luck. There are some very capable light off-road vehicles on the market today, so car-based crossover enthusiasts can rejoice.

But remember, all-wheel-drive, unlike four-wheel-drive, usually doesn't include low-range gearing, increasing the risk of motorists becoming stranded in densely snow-packed conditions. Nevertheless, an all-wheel-drive vehicle might be the best option for you. Which is why we included both drivetrains in our list. Without further ado, here it is (in no particular order.)

2014-Jeep-Grand-Cherokee-SRT-winter-vehicle-guide.jpg

2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT

This powerful performer earns a spot on our winter wondervehicle list for obvious reasons. Jeep has built its entire image off the fact that you drive them on pretty much every terrain imaginable, so why not snow?

HIGHLIGHTS: Its 6.4-liter HEMI V8 with fuel-saving technology gives you 470 hp at 6,000 rpm and 465 lb-ft of torque at 4,300 rpm. Jeep's Quadra-Trac Active on Demand 4WD gives drivers the option to turn on the four-wheel-drive in more rugged terrain.

BASE PRICE: You can get into a 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT for $63,195. Not bad considering you can literally drive it everywhere.

2014 Land Rover Range Rover Sport

Land Rover may be the only manufacturer with an off-road reputation rivaling Jeep's. If you're looking for a little more luxurious four-wheel-drive styling, this might be the vehicle for you.

HIGHLIGHTS: The 2014 V6 model now offers 340 hp while the optional 5.0-liter supercharged V8 makes 510 hp. That will surely give you enough oomph to handle any type of snowy terrain.

BASE PRICE: 2014 models starts out at $63,495

2014-Subaru-Outback-3.6R-Limited-winter-vehicle-guide

2014 Subaru Outback 3.6R Limited

Subaru makes one of the best all-wheel systems in the business, offering outstanding traction in every condition. It's essentially a station wagon but has a higher ride height, mimicking the design of a crossover SUV.

2014 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon

Again, Jeep makes our list with its legendary “go-anywhere” capability. Fully equipped with Wrangler's part-time four-wheel drive system, this Wrangler could be the most capable vehicle in Jeep's lineup.

HIGHLIGHTS: Under the hood, this Rubicon sports a 3.6-liter V6 24-valve VVT engine. Transmission is available in a five-speed automatic or six-speed manual. Rubicon also features its “Command-Trac Shift-on-the-fly” 4WD system which essentially allows the driver to choose when they want to switch to four-wheel drive.

BASE PRICE: The 2014 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon starts at $34,495.

2014-Subaru-XV-Crosstrek-winter-vehicle-guide.jpg

2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek

Just from the name it's obvious that this thing can hold its own in polar conditions. Buyers concerned with fuel-efficiency, the 2014 models offer a hybrid option for only a few thousand more -- $4,000 to be exact.

HIGHLIGHTS: The Crosstrek's 2.0-liter 148-horsepower horizontally opposed four-cylinder engine drives all four wheels while still offering a 33 mpg highway rating.

BASE PRICE: Buyers can get into a 2014 Crosstrek for as low as $21,995.

2014 Chevrolet Silverado High Country

Chevy's first premium truck on the market combines the power and capability pre-requisites to make it onto our list. The 2014 model features Silverado's most powerful EcoTec3 6.2-liter V8 engine.

HIGHLIGHTS: Silverado's available 420-hp and 460 lb-ft of torque is enough to give even the most timid winter drivers the confidence they need to get out of any snowy situation. The High Country is also available in a two-wheel-drive model with a standard 5.3-liter engine.

BASE PRICE: The 2014 Silverado High Country starts at $45,100 for two-wheel-drive models.

2014-Chevrolet-Tahoe-winter-vehicle-guide.jpg

2014 Chevrolet Tahoe

The Chevy Tahoe is one of the best-selling full-size SUVs in America so obviously the company is doing something right. The 2014 models offer both two-wheel and four-wheel-drive all powered by a 5.3-liter V8 engine.

HIGHLIGHTS: The 2014 Tahoe can put out a maximum 320-hp and 348 lb-ft of torque. The Tahoe not only has brute strength (it has a towing capacity of 8,500 pounds) but is also equipped with a comfortable and roomy cabin. Not the mention the respectable 21 mpg highway rating.

BASE PRICE: Buyers can get themselves a 2014 Tahoe for $41,600.

2014 Volvo XC70 T6 AWD

Don't let the station wagon design cues of this Volvo XC70 fool you, it still offers a 300-horsepower turbocharged six-cylinder engine. Volvo also offers a 240-horsepower 3.2-liter six-cylinder engine with front-wheel-drive, but for the winter minded buyers we suggest the first option.

HIGHLIGHTS: The available 325 lb-ft of torque at 2,100-4,200 rpm is especially helpful when traversing over snow-covered pavement. And the estimated 23 mpg highway rating isn't too shabby either.

BASE PRICE: The T6 AWD version starts at $41,865

2014-Mini-Countryman-ALL4-S-winter-vehicle-guide.jpg

2014 Mini Countryman ALL4 S

You hear Mini and automatically think of that sporty little Cooper and wonder how that could possibly suffice in the barren snowy terrain, but the 2014 Mini Countryman ALL4 S is a whole new breed.

HIGHLIGHTS: This subcompact four-door wagon comes with a fully capable 181-hp four-cylinder engine and all-wheel-drive. The AWD system is designed specifically to distribute drive power seamlessly between the front and rear axles.

BASE PRICE: The 2014 Mini Countryman ALL4S bottoms out at $27,400.

2014 Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG S-Model 4MATIC Wagon

When thinking of luxury German engineered cars, our first thought is not of their winter capable features, but rather how terrible I remember my Grandpa's BMW 3-Series being in the snow. But this Mercedes-Benz E-Class is different.

HIGHLIGHTS: The 2014 E-Class models include your choice of a V6 or V8 engine. Should you choose to go the AMG route, under the hood you'll find 577-hp and 590 lb-ft of torque.

BASE PRICE: The AMG E-Class wagon starts out at $103,295

A look at Volvo future products: New engines, architecture on the way

A look at Volvo future products: New engines, architecture on the way

The next Volvo S80, due in 2015, could take styling cues from the Volvo You concept, shown.

Volvo wants to derive economies of scale from a new front-wheel-drive architecture called SPA, for Scalable Platform Architecture.

The redesigned XC90 crossover due in 2014 will be the first to use the architecture.

SPA was designed for a new family of four-cylinder gasoline and diesel engines that Volvo will begin using on existing models next fall. Eventually, the new four-cylinders will replace all of Volvo's current five- and six-cylinder engines.

Volvo is also considering whether to offer a gasoline hybrid on the XC60 or S60 in 2014 or to wait on new SPA-based new models.

The Swedish brand also wants to build cars in North America, possibly with a partner such as Fiat, and to share development costs on smaller cars. Volvo is owned by China's Zhejiang Geely Holding Group.

C30: A redesigned or re-engineered version of the hatchback is likely in the next few years.

C70: A redesign of the hardtop convertible is due in several years.

S60: The S60 sedan will be freshened in 2013 and redesigned three or four years later.

XC60: The crossover will be redesigned in 2016 and share components with the new-generation S60 sedan.

XC70: The tall wagon may be replaced in 2015 or 2016, based on the redesigned S80.

S80: The large sedan will be replaced in 2015 and switch to Volvo's new platform architecture. It likely will take styling cues from the Volvo You concept.

XC90: The redesigned crossover debuts in 2014. It will be the first to use SPA. Design changes are expected, but the rounded shoulders that have been on most Volvo models since the 1990s will remain. Company executives have said the XC90 will have "more luxurious proportions."

Large flagship sedan: Volvo has shown concepts, including the Volvo You four-door fastback at the 2011 Frankfurt auto show. It is unclear whether a car based on that concept will be produced. Volvo executives say they don't want a vehicle to compete with the Mercedes-Benz S-class or BMW 7 series.

IIHS names safest cars for 2013

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has named the safest cars for 2013, including 13 midsize sedans that qualify for a new “top safety pick+” designation.

The new top safety pick+ designation is given to vehicles that earn “good” ratings for occupant protection in at least four of five tests, with no less than “acceptable” in the fifth test. A new test -- the small overlap test -- was added to assess how the vehicles perform during a front-corner collision with another vehicle or object, such as a utility pole.

The 13 cars that earned the rating are the Acura TL, Dodge Avenger and its twin, the Chrysler 200 sedan, Ford Fusion, Honda Accord coupe and sedan, Kia Optima, Nissan Altima sedan, Subaru Legacy and its twin, the Subaru Outback, Suzuki Kizashi, Volkswagen Passat and Volvo S60.

IIHS rates vehicles based on their performance in moderate overlap front crash, small overlap frontal crash, side impact and rollover, plus evaluations of seat/head restraints. The top safety pick designation was first applied in the 2006 model year.

Top safety pick awards were given to 117 vehicles for 2013 that have good ratings for occupant protection in the original four categories, regardless of how they performed in the new small overlap rating. Visit IIHS.org for a full list of 2013's safest cars.

Luxury and non-luxury midsize cars are the first group to be evaluated for the new small overlap test, so more top safety pick+ winners could be announced in the future. Results for the small SUVs are expected this spring.

2014 Subaru Legacy 2.5i Sport review notes

ASSOCIATE EDITOR GRAHAM KOZAK: I hope that other editors can get some laid-back open-road cruising in on this 2014 Subaru Legacy 2.5i Sport because I was stuck in the snow. Not literally, thank God. But Detroit's surface roads were (surprise!) unplowed and downright treacherous when I got behind the wheel. The few other drivers venturing out had apparently never encountered snow before, providing hazards of a more dynamic sort.

In other words, these were the exact sort of conditions everyone imagines they'll encounter on a daily basis when they decide to buy a Subaru. Fortunately, the car delivered.

Oh, you never quite forgot you were in a Subaru. The engine/trans combo is OK, but it doesn't feel very refined. I'm talking about the transmission, not the buzzy boxer, which has its own sort of charm. Subaru has proven it can produce a quick CVT, but so far it hasn't been able to build one that doesn't sound like it's going to explode under acceleration.

Step on the gas and you're thrown into a spat between the wheels and the motor; the CVT is caught in the middle and it whines along horribly. I'm not sure how this conflict is resolved, but the result was satisfactory. On the road in terrible conditions, the car remained very balanced, very predictable. With the roads deserted, I figured I'd switch off traction control and see if the car's road manners were solely a product of computerized nannies.

I didn't notice a difference. Limited (if any) wheelspin on takeoff and firm, confident cornering; all in all, it felt well engineered mechanically, if that makes sense. Subaru makes a big deal out of its “Symmetrical All Wheel Drive” system and -- what the hell -- it actually works as advertised. My time in the snow was, dare I say, fun.

But even in the mountains of Vermont, you're not going to be in the snow all year. That's when the Subaru's shortcomings might start to wear on you. Fortunately, for Subaru, they're mostly aesthetic. Namely, the car is pretty boring inside and out -- a real snoozer. Looking back at past models, it doesn't seem like this is a stylistic step back, but damn it if Subaru hasn't cranked out some stunning concepts and then completely ignored them when it came time to order up production sheetmetal.

Similarly, the inside isn't terrible -- it's just old and plain. The infotainment system is functional, and I was immediately familiar with it as it is the same unit found in the BRZ.

All of this was easy enough to overlook before companies like Mazda upped their exterior/interior design game and Ford released the very mature Fusion in our market. How has Subaru managed to overcome this lack of flash and still power through to record-breaking sales as of late? It's got to be the price. I didn't exactly feel like I was being cheated in this car at just under $28,000, but keep in mind that you can get into a bare-bones model for just over $20,000. And then there is a new Legacy coming our way that just debuted at the Chicago auto show.

2014-Subaru-Legacy-2.5i-Sport.jpg

Deep snow was no match for the 2014 Subaru Legacy 2.5i Sport.

EDITOR WES RAYNAL: It's definitely winter around here, no question, and Subarus are terrific winter cars.

This example is no exception. The ride is smooth and controlled and comfortable. This is a hugely important point this time of year, when oftentimes the roads are one track through snow and there are mounds of ice and potholes are growing bigger and the whole thing is just a hot mess. This car handles it all with nary a worry. No jarring, no abruptness -- just steady as she goes.

The car's not a rocket, but, in this weather, who cares? The flat four continues to sound Subaru-ish, and I mean that as a compliment. I don't love the CVT, but it's not bad as these things go. Besides, so many automakers are going that route; I've thrown up my hands and just accepted that they're here to stay until someone comes up with something better.

The interior is pleasant. I was surprised at the rear seat room. The materials are good and the layout comfortable. Heated cloth seats are the way to go: They warm up nicely but aren't freezing cold when you first get in. Yeah, I still think the radio buttons are too small, but they actually seem bigger than the ones in the last Subaru I drove.

The only thing I'd do different if this were my car: I'd like to get a wagon, but that would mean having to step up into an Outback. Other than that, I liked it a lot. Nice car that's a solid value.

2014-Subaru-Legacy-2.5i-Sport

While its not a turbo WRX motor, the naturally aspirated horizontally-oppose four pot was more than adequate for lugging around the 2014 Subaru Legacy 2.5i Sport.

DIGITAL EDITOR ANDREW STOY: The intrepid Davey G. Johnson was chatting me up about Subaru's new WRX, which is available for the first time with an optional CVT. Johnson attempted to convince me that the transmission was really good, and I attempted to explain to him that he was full of it.

After driving this Legacy, however, I'm not so confident of my convictions. Granted, this car doesn't have the WRX turbo engine, but mated with the 2.5 boxer four-cylinder, the CVT does an outstanding job moving our Subaru sedan along without calling undue attention to itself. The horizontal engine's machinations were even subdued…it's not Honda sewing-machine smooth or anything, but the combination bordered on refined. Egads!

Yet another snowstorm, followed by the well-publicized Polar Vortex, descended upon Detroit while I had the Subaru, and I was thankful it was in the driveway. Even wearing all-season rubber, the Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive system did an outstanding job keeping the car in line, and at no point did I feel the car was in danger of going in an unintended direction. Keep in mind I was driving like a sane, rational person would in terrible weather -- reduced speeds, both hands on the wheel, cell phone in my pocket; no car can overcome stupidity, but the Subaru rewards careful driving.

Speaking of winter weather, our Legacy featured heated cloth seats. Eureka! There's no technical reason this isn't possible, but most manufacturers effectively charge you thousands of dollars for heated seats by shoving them into a package with leather, headlight washers and other options. Subaru makes them standard on all models except the base 2.5i. It's a little detail, but it's one that shows Subaru is paying attention to its clientele.

I commented in a past review of the Legacy 3.6R that the car was too expensive to recommend over more refined competitors. With the 2.5i Sport, that equation completely flip-flops. Subaru is offering lots of interior room, a nice-sized trunk and a downright fun powertrain (yep, I said it) all wrapped in reasonably attractive sheetmetal; add the capability of AWD and a sticker around $27k for our loaded Sport (a base Sport starts under $25k) and you've got a great car for the money.

If you live in the snowbelt or you venture off the beaten path and you don't want to worship at the SUV altar, the Legacy is an outstanding value with few shortcomings.

Base Price: $24,390

As-Tested Price: $27,640

Drivetrain: 2.5-liter H4; AWD, continuously variable transmission

Output: 173 hp @ 5,600 rpm, 174 lb-ft @ 4,100 rpm

Curb Weight: 3,315 lb

Fuel Economy (EPA City/Highway/Combined): 24/32/27 mpg

AW Observed Fuel Economy: 24.2 mpg

Options: Option package 37 including 18-inch allow wheels, power moonroof, autodim mirrors, HomeLink, reverse camera, carbon fiber pattern trim, fog lights, aluminum alloy pedal covers, black cloth seats with unique stitching, navigation system with Aha infotainment, SiriusXM NavTraffic, voice activated control ($3,800)

2015 Subaru Legacy photos leaked

2015 Subaru Legacy photos leaked

The 2015 Subaru Legacy will debut at the Chicago auto show. Photo by Subaru

The 2015 Subaru Legacy was scheduled to debut at the Chicago Auto Show this week, but press photos leaked early at a certain Aussie site. Down Under it's called the Subaru Liberty.

The new car takes some cues from the Legacy concept we saw at the LA Auto Show, though many of the curved lines seem to have been pulled straight. That concept pulled from the even wilder Viziv design study introduced at the Geneva motor show.

Legacy sales are actually down 14 percent this January over last, though Subaru sales are up as a whole. We're not sure if the polar vortex had anything to do with it, but we definitely won't rule it out.

2015-Subaru-interior.jpg

The instrument panel behind the wheel looks similar to the outgoing model, while the center console and gear selector area has been upgraded. The cupholders now sit right of the shifter, and three knobs for controlling the climate are directly in front. An updated touchscreen with new controls is also featured prominently.

We'll find out more about the engine selection later this week. The 148-hp, 2.0-liter flat-four from the Crosstrek will probably be standard with the 173-hp, 2.5-liter optional. Last year's model featured a CVT in H4 models with a five-speed automatic in six-cylinder cars.
