“I had a good feeling on the pitch and also in the game,” Deila said. “The result is everything, but you can feel if something is growing and we’ve been growing for a long time and this is very good proof that we can do very well in matches as well.

“We smashed them in the first half. It was a high-level performance. We were up for the game and the boys did a fantastic job.

“I was happy about the defence, we didn’t give them anything. We created chances, scored on crosses and had set-pieces on the level we want.

“It’s very pleasing and important to see strikers scoring, we need goals and we’re back on track again.”

Commons was missing due to a recurrence of a buttock injury but Deila was relaxed when informed of Neil Lennon’s interest in him.

The new Bolton manager admitted he would like to be reunited with the Celtic midfielder whose contract is up at the end of the season, if the price was right.

Deila said: “My reaction is that no one is leaving, we won’t want to sell anybody. We want to build a team. I think we have a very good dialogue and process going on with this. This doesn’t worry me.”

Emilio Izaguirre was carried off on a stretcher with an ankle injury following a challenge by Michael Gardyne but Deila is hoping both he and Commons will be fit for the Europa League game against Romanian side Astra Giurgiu at Parkhead on Thursday night.

He said: “I think it’s too early to say but I hope and I think Emilio is going to be fine.

“It’s the same ankle he broke a couple of years so maybe he got a bit scared about that, so I really hope it’s nothing serious.

“Commons is injured. I think he will be back for Thursday.”

A late penalty from Nadir Ciftci helped Dundee United overcome 10-man Partick Thistle 1-0 at Tannadice to close the gap on Scottish Premiership leaders Hamilton.

St Johnstone’s miserable run of form continued as they suffered a 2-1 defeat to Kilmarnock at McDiarmid Park.

David Clarkson sent former club Motherwell on their way to a fourth consecutive home defeat in the league with a brilliant early finish in a 3-1 victory at Fir Park.

Goals from Clarkson, Gary Harkins and Greg Stewart had Dundee three goals ahead before the hour-mark amid some lax Motherwell marking and the home side could not find a way back despite Henrik Ojamaa quickly reducing the deficit to two.

Greg Tansey’s first-half penalty secured three points in a 1-0 win for Inverness away to St Mirren in a poor match lacking quality and littered with eight bookings and a dismissal.

In the Championship, Kris Boyd finally ended his seven-game scoring drought as Rangers romped to a 6-1 win over Raith Rovers at Ibrox.

Ibrox hitman was expected to lead the scoring charts after returning to the club in the summer but despite finding the net five times in cup action, he had failed to live up to expectations in the Scottish Championship.

However, he was given a helping hand by Rovers keeper Ross Laidlaw as he finally netted his first league goal of the campaign.

With Lee McCulloch, Nicky Law and Kenny Miller already on the scoresheet, Boyd’s left-footed strike was palmed into the Rovers net when it should have been an easy save.

Rovers had started the second-half well, pulling the score back to 2-1 with Martin Scott’s header

But after losing 4-0 to Ally McCoist’s men at Stark’s Park last month, they suffered another heavy thumping as substitute Jon Daly netted twice in the final five minutes.

It was the perfect build-up for the Gers’ Petrofac Training Cup quarter-final with East Fife on Tuesday.

Hearts romped to a fifth successive win by overcoming Dumbarton 5-1 in a dominant display at Tynecastle.
