Swansea City’s Jonjo Shelvey is facing a four match ban for elbowing Liverpool’s Emre Can after the FA confirmed a violent conduct charge.
A review of the incident – missed by referee Andre Marriner – means Shelvey is staring at an extended absence as he has already been red carded this season.
Liverpool striker Raheem Sterling has escaped punishment for raising a hand to opponent Federico Fernandez, however. The match officials confirmed they spotted that particular incident during the Merseyside club’s 4-1 victory, meaning no retrospective action could be taken.
Confirming Shelvey’s charge, a Football Association statement read: “Swansea City’s Jonjo Shelvey has on Tuesday been charged by The FA for violent conduct, following an incident in his side’s fixture with Liverpool.
“The incident, which was not seen by the match officials but caught on video, occurred during the fixture between the two sides at Anfield on Monday 29 December 2014.
“Shelvey has until 6pm on Wednesday 31 December 2014 to respond to the charge.”
Swansea may query how Marriner missed the alleged elbow given it appeared to be in his eyeline, but the severity of the incident did warrant further scrutiny from a three man panel of former referees.
The video evidence immediately after the game did not look good for the ex-Liverpool midfielder, although there will be relief at Anfield Sterling does not find himself in similar trouble.
Swansea face QPR on New Year’s Day ahead of an FA Cup tie at Tranmere Rovers. They then meet West Ham and Chelsea.
It is now likely they will be without Shelvey for all those fixtures.
