Partick Thistle and Ross County loan heroes say little for Scottish game

Taylor, for his part, scored 29 goals for Falkirk last season, form which persuaded then Sheffield United manager David Weir to buy him for £220,000.

Unfortunately, he harvested only two goals from 20 appearances for the side who are one point above the League One relegation zone and Weir’s successor, Nigel Clough, was happy to allow him to return north of the border while he attempts to keep the Yorkshire club out of the fourth tier.

Michael Tidser, another refugee from League One, started just two league games for Rotherham in 2013/14 before heading for the Highlands.

He was joined in January by Jordan Slew, a 21-year-old striker sent on loan by Blackburn, for whom he has made only one appearance (as a substitute) in the Championship.

With managers understandably unwilling to wait for homegrown talent to emerge from a club’s youth system, loan deals and cheap foreign signings are the order of the day.

Having said that, there were few spectators asking for their money back following this encounter, which saw the home side disappoint their supporters yet again.

Thistle have now gone 11 matches and over nine months since they last won a league fixture at home and they tossed away a 3-1 lead here.

Kiss opened the scoring when he placed the ball behind Scott Fox from 25 yards before Taylor twice stepped ahead of marker Scott Boyd to beat Michael Fraser.

Steven Lawless appeared to have sealed the outcome when he finished off an impressive six-man move in the 47th minute but full-back Ben Gordon pulled one back within minutes and Kiss provided a composed finish for a merited equaliser which leaves County second from bottom, one point behind the hosts.

Afterwards Aaron Muirhead, the Thistle central defender who has been converted into a holding midfielder, stretched the credulity of his audience when he claimed that their failure at Firhill is not even a topic for discussion among the players.

“I don't think that the home record has become a psychological problem,” he said.

“No one in the dressing room ever talks about it but we were really down after this result because it felt as though we'd lost.

“But I'm absolutely sure that we'll all be positive when we go out against Kilmarnock on Saturday.

“You should win when you score three at home but getting those goals will help our confidence and will especially help Lyle.

“We have quality all over the park and even our full-backs were involved in the goals we scored today. We have creative players in every area of the team so our goals can come from anywhere.”

County, meanwhile, are unbeaten in their last three games and Gordon believes that they will not remain in the play-off position for long.

"We would definitely not expect to be at the bottom in May,” he said. “We have made good signings already in January and we all know there is great quality in the changing room.

"Hopefully, we have turned the corner now and gained a bit of confidence. We want to keep our unbeaten run going with two home games coming up and then Kilmarnock away.

"No one has really been speaking about the play-offs. We want to really kick on and catch the likes of St Mirren and Kilmarnock and start climbing the league. All the players are really up for the challenge.”
