Green appeared to have strayed outside his box and was therefore lucky perhaps not to have been dismissed.

The early stages were punctuated by fouls but it did not spoil what was an attractive game. Charlie Austin almost scored from Joey Barton’s corner but Gylfi Sigurdsson did well to block.

Nothing could block the long-range strike from Leroy Fer which put Rangers ahead. The Dutchman took a touch to control before smashing a rising shot beyond the Lukasz Fabianski to give Harry Redknapp’s side the edge.

Bobby Zamora ought to have doubled the lead two minutes later as Eduardo Vargas’ superb run and cross found him at the far post but the striker headed over.

Gomis will bear much of the goal-scoring responsibility once Wilfried Bony departs for the Africa Cup of Nations in a few days. Nathan Dyer presented him with an excellent opportunity to level but he dragged his low effort wide of the far post.

Gomis was lively if inaccurate. Leon Britton did well to find Routledge on the left but the former Lyon striker could only head his cross over under pressure from Richard Dunne.

Rangers were proving dangerous from distance and Mauricio Isla brought a full length save from Fabianski before Zamora was wasteful with the follow-up.

Vargas then had the final chance of an entertaining half as Austin’s cross reached him at the far post where he smashed against the stanchion from the acutest of angles.

Swansea’s away from is not as woeful as QPR’s but they have not been happy travellers this season.

Rangers started the second half far more brightly than they had the first and Austin headed Clint Hill’s cross against the near post before Fer almost bettered his goal with a curling strike from distance which went narrowly wide.

Swansea gradually found their rhythm again and Sigurdsson curled a deft strike just wide after good work from Gomis.

Monk waited until the final twenty minutes to bring Bony from the bench and he and Marvin Emnes added further impetus to the Swans’ attack.

Nevertheless, it was Fer who looked likeliest to score again and he almost did after another viscous strike from the edge of the area.

Bony’s first impact was a well-struck free kick over the wall which Green clawed to safety as Swansea pressed for an equaliser. They came desperately close with ten minutes remaining.

Ki Sung-Yeung was brilliantly foiled by Green in a one on one situation before Dunne somehow cleared Emnes’ headed follow-up off the line.

The drama peaked in the final five minutes as Henry’s rash challenge on Routledge earned him a booking but the Swansea winger received a straight red for his reaction.

Bony then showed the poise and skill he has become known for as he received Sung-Yeung's pass, turned smartly and stabbed beyond Green before Austin and Barton were denied at the other end for QPR with some last ditch defending.
