Virginia Lottery Director Prepares for Online Gambling Games The head of the Virginia Lottery says US online gambling is inevitable, and she hopes Virginia acts to be at the forefront of using Internet games.

The executive director of the Virginia Lottery says online gambling in the US is inevitable, and wants her charge to be prepared to deal with the future. Paula Otto told the Daily Press that, without change, lottery games have no growth potential, and Internet gaming may be among the best options.

"It's hard to say what the future will hold, but if we continue with certain products, there is probably little or no growth from year to year," Otto stated. When asked if that future might hold online gambling, Otto replied, "In my view, it's not if but when."

Other possibilities for the future of lotteries include gambling on video game results, video lottery terminals, and putting games at established gambling venues like race tracks and poker rooms.

Otto also predicted that the Powerball/ Mega Money super-lotteries will result in a national lottery game within the next year or so.

Although Virginia was the first southern state to host a lottery, the state has avoided casino games in the past, but now must face the economic reality that sales have flattened, says Otto. This has led the director to examine ways to keep the attention of customers always eager for new and different games.
