Team PokerStars' Chad Brown, who plays on PokerStars under 'ChadBrownPRO', has a monkey on his back--despite having more than $3 million in lifetime tournament winnings, he's never won a World Series of Poker bracelet. That's something he hopes to change this summer in Las Vegas during the 2013 WSOP.
Brown learned to play in the back of Italian cafes while growing up in Bronx before heading to Hollywood in the early 90s to pursue an acting career. It was during this time that he realized he could supplement his income playing cards.
In this edition of This or That, which takes a look at both the serious and unserious sides of various Team PokerStars Pros, we caught up with Brown to talk about life in Vegas, both on and off the felt.
Chad Holloway: How's the WSOP going for you so far?
Chad Brown: Not well as far as cashes go. I've made four Day 2s, so four time getting close to cashing, but falling short.
Do you live out here in Las Vegas?
I split time between here, L.A. and Vancouver.
Do you think it's a little bit of an advantage to be able to go home at the end of the day when a lot of players are far away from home and have to stay at a hotel weeks on end?
Obviously it's an individual thing. For me personally, I don't have any problem when I'm on the road sleeping in a hotel, so for me it's not an advantage it's all the same.
Do you have any pets? If so, how does that work when you travel so much?
When I was with Vanessa (Rousso) we had two dogs, but she retained custody of the dogs, so I see them when I'm here in Vegas.
Aside from playing poker, what do you like to do when you're in Las Vegas?
Well, I like to go to some fine restaurants, I enjoy going to see some good shows, and in the summer time I do like to rent a boat at the lake when I have a day off.
If you had to take someone who has never been to Vegas out to eat where would you take them?
Easy, because out of all the restaurants around the world that I've ever been to, no place compares. For people who like steak, they go to Craftsteak at the MGM and order the skirt steak. There's never been a steak that's quite as good as that.
Speaking of being around the world, where's your favorite place to go, be it for poker or otherwise?
My favorite place that I went on vacation was to Switzerland on a ski vacation. I actually wrote a blog on that trip for the PokerStars Blog, so anyone who wants to get all the details as to why that was one of my favorite trips they can get it in that blog.
What's your favorite kind of food?
I'm half Italian, my mom's Italian, and she's an incredible cook, so I grew up with some of the best Italian cooking. So Italian is easily, hands down my favorite food.
Other than yourself, who is your favorite poker player?
My favorite poker player to watch is Phil Ivey.
I had heard that you were going to make a cameo in the web-TV poker series Bullets, but due to a scheduling conflict you had to pass and recommended fellow poker pro Ali Eslami. As a former actor, is appearing in a poker-related show or movie something you're interested in doing?
Being a former actor, I just love acting. What would have been interesting in Bullets is they wanted me to appear as me, Chad Brown. I've actually never acted as me. That would have been a first and would have been interesting. In general, any acting gig, because I always love the craft, I would enjoy a guest part or something like that. It's always fun for me.
