Craig stepped up from his assistant manager's role when Danny Lennon left the club at the end of last season but has won just three of his 19 games in charge. Saturday's home defeat to St Johnstone left St Mirren off the bottom of the Scottish Premiership on goal difference alone.
A club statement read: "Tommy Craig has left the club by mutual consent. Player/coach Gary Teale will take charge of the team on an interim basis and will be assisted by Head of Youth Development David Longwell until such times as a successor is appointed.
"The board of directors would like to thank Tommy for all of his efforts on behalf of the club during his time as assistant and latterly manager and wish him all the best for the future."
Former Scotland international Teale had been a player/coach under Craig, along with midfielder Jim Goodwin.
Teale told Sky Sports News HQ: "I do feel as a player that we have let Tommy down slightly, but again now we need to look forward and hope that the results change with some new ideas.
"All they have said is 'Can you take over at this moment in time?' We'll leave it on a game-by-game basis just now. I'm over the moon and hoping to do the best job I can. I'll always be grateful for Tommy for giving me the chance to get involved in the coaching side in the first place."
Saints are also out of both domestic cup competitions and without a win of any kind since October 4.
