An early Michael O'Halloran goal proved enough to give the visitors all three points as they secured a fifth successive league victory.
But Wright admitted St Mirren made his St Johnstone side work hard for the win and backed Craig to pull the club’s fortunes around.
"It's not for me to really comment on other clubs' matters, but from what I saw today you can clearly see a group of players that are willing to fight for their manager - and they certainly created chances and put us under pressure,” said Wright.
"We did control the game in the first half, but gave them too many chances in the second to get back into it. Having said that, we had our own with Brian Graham hitting the post, so all in all I think we did deserve the points.
"Football is strange, they'll no doubt feel that they aren't getting the breaks, but Tommy has been in the game for a long time and he'll be working hard to improve things."
Victory moves St Johnstone to within a point of the Scottish Premiership's top six and Wright is determined they will not be dragged into a survival scrap this season.
"First and foremost we don't want to be in a relegation battle like we were a few weeks ago and then we have to aim for a top-half finish,” added Wright.
"For a club like us, with the resources that we have and to get a top-six finish for three years running it really is encouraging and obviously we want to continue our defence of the Scottish Cup and hold on to that for as long as possible."
Craig was also keen to take the positives out of his side’s performance in defeat and he praised the manner in which his side showed their fighting spirit after losing 4-0 away to Inverness CT in their midweek Scottish Cup fourth-round replay.
"The reaction of the players from the midweek cup defeat was excellent, they showed bags of effort,” said Craig.
"But it is another defeat, another disappointment and come Monday morning we start again - but I can base my whole week on today's effort, which was very pleasing."
At the final whistle there were chants from some home supporters calling for Craig to be sacked but he revealed they do not adversely affect him or his players.
"In my programme notes I did say 'let's hear you'. I really do feel the crowd were there to support a goal, there was a willingness for both the fans and players to support one another,” he added.
"The fans were generating a vibrancy. All I would ask is that they keep repeating what they did today and the results will come."
