It is that time of the year again when everyone is looking for a fright and a thrill [GETTY]
And what better way to spend Halloween than carving a pumpkin, popping some popcorn and curling up with a scary film. There may be a terrifying selection of grizzly movies out there to tempt the most daring of frightening film buff.
But despite the vast array of computer generated, modern gory blood-fests, it is the oldies which are expected to keep delivering frights this year.
Research from eBay, based on sales, reveals the old classics are the most popular choice for Halloween film hunters.
And when it comes to remakes, forget it, nothing can beat the spine-tingling chills of the original Halloween, Psycho and The ShiningAnd when it comes to remakes, forget it, nothing can beat the spine-tingling chills of the original Halloween, Psycho and The Shining.
And it is these three shockers which have proven the most popular this year.
At the top of the list is The Shining - commonly rated among horror buffs as one of the greatest jumpers ever made.
Based on the Stephen King novel it is the tale of a writer who moves into an isolated hotel over winter, before going slowly mad and - well I won’t give it away.
The disturbed scribe, Jack Torrance is played to perfection by Jack Nicholson - nobody can forget the iconic “here’s Johnny” moment as he hacks his way into the bathroom with an axe to butcher his wife.
There is no better way than spend Halloween with popcorn and a spooky film [GETTY]
The original 1980s version directed by Stanley Kubrick is a treat time and time again, and guaranteed to chill even the sturdiest of constitutions.Number two, and it’s Hitchcock’s classic Psycho.
Once again this has been remade, and once again no flashy colour replica can come close to the master’s blood-curdling 1960 original.
There can be few who have not seen this beauty, and those who haven’t, once again I’ll not spoil the ending.
This is another which has terrified generations of viewers with its wealth of scares, twists and clever direction, and lack of gore and special effects.
Disturbed Motel owner Norman Bates though mild mannered and inoffensive hides a terrifying and violent secret.
Janet Leigh starred in many films, but it is her grizzly shower death for which she is most remembered - although apparently a body double was used.
The Exorcist is guaranteed to scare you no matter what time of the year you watch it [PH]
Next on the list and we move into the realms of the supernatural, hauntings and demonic possession - oh yes - it’s The Exorcist.Did you know that this film was deemed so disturbing, it was banned in the UK until the late 1990s?
A little over the top I thought, though there is much here to leave viewers too scared to turn the lights off before bed.
Based on William Peter Blatty’s novel of the same name, this is the story of a teenage girl possessed by a demonic force.
Again director William Friedkin relies on chills and scares rather than blood and guts, though anyone with a fear of projectile green vomit ought to look away.
We watch Regan MacNeil and her hapless mother battle the forces of evil with spinning heads, moving furniture and plenty of things that go bump in the night.
Jack Nicholson is terrifying but brilliant in The Shining [Warner Bros]
The film spawned many inferior replicas and is hailed among the horror fraternity as one of the greats. Now onto a real horror classic, number four on eBay’s popularity list - Halloween, my personal favourite.
Again this one spawned a myriad of inferior replicas, including a remake in 2007 which bore almost no similarity to John Carpenter’s iconic original.
Scared of escaped lunatics intent on murder? Figures hiding in the darkness? Heavy breathing coming from somewhere in the room? Then this one is for you.
Its masked villain Michael Myers well earned his place in the rogues gallery of horror baddies after his rampage of terror in this flick.
He is of course the child killer who escapes from a mental hospital 15 years later, only to return to his home town to wreak mayhem.
Again Carpenter relies heavily on hand held cameras which seem to lead the viewer right into the clutches of the killer with his victims.
There are plenty of jump out of your seat moments and only the foolhardy would turn out the lights and watch this one alone.
And finally in the top five is Scream, the most modern of the collection.
This 1996 American slasher follows in the footsteps of Halloween, though in my opinion, falls short of the mark.
Starring ET child star Drew Barrymore and Friends’ Monica, Courteny Cox, it is features another masked maniac stalking teenagers.
Scream is noted as having brought the horror genre back in the 1990s after a string of flops rendered it as dead as one of it’s slasher victims.
A crank telephone caller turns out to be a sadistic and frenzied killer who runs amok in a small American town.
Yes - you know the formula, and although it is a little samey for me, the film was a huge success among newbies to the horror genre.
So there we have the must have viewing list for those wanting a scare on October 31.
So lock the doors and bolt the windows, but whatever you do this Halloween - don’t have nightmares.
